Ballston is a neighborhood, an Orange and Silver Line Metro station and is the western, end point of the Arlington Rosslyn-Ballston Metro Corridor in Arlington, Virginia.
Ballston is named after the Ball family, a family that settled in Arlington during colonial times. John and Moses Ball were the first of the Ball family to own land in Arlington, back in the 1700s. John and Moses were cousins of George Washington.
Brief History
Around 1740, two roads were created and the area was named Birch’s Crossroads. This was an important intersection, allowing easier commercial trade and passage to and from Alexandria and to Washington, DC.
The first road was named Glebe Road because it passed the glebe of Fairfax Parish. The second was eventually given the name Wilson Boulevard after President Woodrow Wilson.
Years later one of the Ball descendants established Ball Tavern, a two story log tavern and market, post office and general store. Ball Tavern was the social and commercial center of the area.
In 1896, the Fairfax line of the Washington, Arlington and Falls Church Railway began operating and had a stop at the Ballston Trolley Station. The Fairfax trolley line closed in 1939.
Over the years, the village grew in population. The Parkington Shopping Center (later Ballston Commons) opened in 1951 and contained the Hecht Company headquarters and the largest parking garage in the country.
In 1979, the Ballston Metrorail station was opened leading to rapid commercial and residential development of the surrounding area.
The Ballston Metro Station now sits on the former site of the Ballston Trolley Station. Ballston Quarter now sits on the former site of Ballston Tavern.
The National Hockey League (NHL) Washington Capitals Iceplex, their official office and training facility, sits atop of the Ballston Quarter parking garage.
